This all-day clinic is an introduction to paddling the Lower American River to prepare for the Great American Triathlon.  After safely completing this clinic, you are entitled to use the Aquatic Center’s kayak for the upcoming race.  Entry to the Great American Triathlon is not included with the clinic.  Visit The Great American Triathlon website for race information.

Course Details

Length: 7 Hours
Minimum Enrollment: 3
Maximum Enrollment: 18
Minimum Age Requirement: 18

The course will start at the Aquatic Center and start with in intro to paddling, with paddling techniques, navigation and recovery.  The second part of the day we will transport all participants to the American River and take you thru the race course.  Transport will pick you up and return you to the Aquatic Center.

For Equipment Pick up – July 19
  • Kayaks must be picked up on Friday, July 19 between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM. 
  • Each participant will be checked out a kayak, life jacket, paddle and helmet.
  • You must transport the kayak and have a proper vehicle for hauling kayak.  Kayaks are 14 feet long
  • You will need to provide your own tie downs (no bungees)
  • We recommend bringing someone with you to help you load the kayak
  • You will need to bring your photo ID and credit card
  • You will need to fill out a deposit slip and waiver when you pick up your equipment 
Race Day
  • We recommend putting a ribbon on the kayak to designate which kayak is your (there will be 18 of our kayaks.)
  • Do not use stickers, duct tape or any permit markers on any of the Aquatic Center equipment.
For Returning
  • All equipment must be returned to the Aquatic Center on Saturday, July 20, 2024 by 3:00 PM
  • A $100.00 late fee will be assessed for anyone returning after 3:00 PM
  • We will have a staff member outside to check your equipment back in
  • You must check in all the equipment; kayak, paddle, life jacket and paddle

What to Expect

  • A swim test is required.
  • You will get wet! Bring a towel.
  • You should wear clothes that are comfortable and can get wet.
  • Most appropriate shoes are tennis shoes.
  • NO FLIP FLOPS!
  • The Front Office staff can hold your keys during class.
  • Any other personal belongings may be stored in a $0.50 one-time use locker. (Takes 2 quarters)
  • Expect to arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete the registration and check-in process.
